UP TO 51 Telstra customer service staff in Melbourne and Sydney will be made redundant to allow for a centralised office in Adelaide.

The call centre staff - 18 in Melbourne and 33 in Sydney - are part of the telco's enterprise and government division, and are responsible for dealing with some of its big business customers. From May, their jobs will be moved to Adelaide, where 55 positions will be created.

Telstra said the consolidation of sites would improve "the quality and consistency of service" but would result in redundancies for the Melbourne and Sydney staff.

"We will seek to, where possible, retain any employee whose job is redundant by identifying suitable alternative roles across Telstra, as well as helping them identify external job opportunities," the company said in a note to staff.
